TLS: Redesign

After working for a number of years as a regular contributor to the TLS, I was asked to redesign the magazine and website to give it a more modern, fresh look. This is the result. (All illustrations are mine unless otherwise stated.)

Art Direction: Sachini Imbuldeniya. Design: Graham Smith. Editorial: Robert Potts.

The Times Literary Supplement is an unusual beast, given that it is not made by The Times, it’s not (just) literary, and it’s not a supplement. It is a successful newsstand magazine printed on terrible paper and with a very antiquated look – but with a very passionate fanbase that doesn’t particularly embrace change.

I love a challenge.

First to change was the masthead/logotype, removing that awkward serif. Below is a series of layouts in print and digital.

After a lot of back and forth – especially on the cover – we finally settled on the layout, left. Here it is marked up with directions for the art team, and below are some of the covers and instagram posts I produced for the new design.
